Yesterday afternoon at 1:14pm, Central Mexico was shaken by a powerful earthquake. The quake had a 7.1 magnitude and has caused damage to Mexico City and the surrounding states of Mexico, Puebla, Morelos, and Guerrero.
As of 9:10am this morning, official figures are reporting 225 deaths. Rescue efforts continue in many parts of these affected areas as over 50 buildings have collapsed, including an elementary school. Hundreds of other buildings and residences have incurred severe structural damage. Mexico is still recovering from an earthquake off the southern central coast on September 7th where 98 people lost their lives. We thank God that our team in Querétaro was not affected by the earthquake. After a couple long hours yesterday, everyone was able to get in contact with family members in the Mexico City area, all of whom are unharmed. Thank you to all who have reached out to check up on our team. We are thankful for your love and prayers. Our hearts break with those who are suffering and we ask you to join us in praying for the millions who have been affected. We cling to God’s truth revealed to us in Psalm 75:3 “When the earth and all its people quake, it is I who hold its pillars firm.” 9/12/2017 Better TogetherThere are a lot of things in life that are better when shared with other people. Meals, vacations, and laughter are some of the first that come to mind. Ministry is also one of those things. Our IMPACTOLatino missionaries are dedicated to working collaboratively and forming strong teams for our church plants. We know that church planting is a hard endeavor but sharing responsibilities and service makes it so much better. As we've been working developing the materials and processes for the new IMPACTOnetwork church planting project, we've had the blessing of partnering with some great Christian organizations also dedicated to expanding God's Kingdom. Stadia generously shared their assessment materials as well as allowing Sergio and Holly Alvarado to observe/participate in a church planter assessment session. We translated the materials and contextualized them for use with church planters in Mexico. They continue to assist us as we prepare for the first IMPACTOnetwork assessment weekend in February 2018. Passion for Planting has a huge amount of resources available for church planters that walks them through developing strategies for all different facets of the church plant. We partnered with them to translate materials which are now available for church planters working in a Spanish speaking context. The templates that we translated and modified for use in Mexico will be part of the tools we use to equip our future church planters. Good News Productions International has been a long time partner with the IMPACTOLatino team. They have supported the IMPACTOnetwork project with multimedia equipment that is being used to develop resources for recruitment and training. Also, Pablo Perales who serves with them from Querétaro is assisting us in the area of multimedia and design. We are so grateful for these organizations that willingly share their resources so that together we are able to reach more people than we could on our own. We are also so grateful for churches and individual supporters that generously give to support church planting in Mexico. We couldn't do it with out you! "I thank my God every time I remember you" Philippians 1:3 PLEASE PRAY FOR:
-Continued discussions with potential church planters -Preparations for the Assessment Process -Needed funding for the church plants and residency program GIVE THANKS FOR: -Mexico's independence (celebrated this month) and freedom to worship openly -Strong connections with local churches -Generous partner organizations 9/8/2017 Safe and SoundThanks to all of you who have reached out to ask about our team after hearing the news of the strong earthquake that shook Southern Mexico last night. We are glad to report that the city of Querétaro where we live was not affected by it. None of us felt it!
The earthquake was felt in Pachuca but structures there did not sustain damage. Please pray for the people and communities in Southern Mexico that were affected. It was mainly felt in the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas which are 2 of the poorest and underdeveloped in the country and have a rebuilding process ahead. Please also pray against aftershocks which can be strong with a quake of this magnitude. |
